ACTION ALERT

All eyes will be on the Congress
these next few days

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

By Jim Boulet Jr.
Executive Director
English First

English First is involved in two battles:

(1) SCHIP: There are lots of problems with this bill that is supposed to help poor children obtain health insurance.

Yet six states spend more SCHIP money on adults than children (Minnesota, Michigan, New Mexico, Illinois, Rhode Island and New Jersey).

Some states use SCHIP funds to pay for translators, even though these professional translators make mistakes 53% of the time and evey mistake is a potential malpractice lawsuit.

The vote to override the President's veto of the SCHIP bill is expected as soon as Thursday, October 18th in the House and soon thereafter in the Senate.

(2) DREAM Act: This bill has been marketed in such a way that people assume it is limited to a small number of worthy high school valedictorians who s peak English better than most Americans.

Yet the plain text of the DREAM Act says absolutely nothing about English fluency.
Section 4 (a)(1)(D) makes no mention of an applicant's English fluency nor does it specify that any qualifying post-high school education program must be conducted and taken in English.

The DREAM Act could also be on the Senate floor at any time. Your Senators need to hear from you.

TAKE ACTION

You can e-mail your elected officials about these two crucial bills from this page on the English First web site:

I'll have more to say later this
week or early next week.

Thank you for your time

Sincerely,

Jim Boulet, Jr.
Executive Director
