Contact Congress to vote against H.R. 2499 – The Puerto Rico Statehood Bill

Acting Executive Director

Send an email to your Representative urging them to vote against H.R. 2499

In my last letter to you, I described what appears to be an effort on the part of the elitists in Washington to replace American voters with tens of millions of non–English speaking new citizens.

Their plan is to pass a massive amnesty for 30-40 million illegal aliens while, at the very same time, invite the Commonwealth of Spanish-speaking Puerto Rico to become a state.

Their scheme is to replace us with people who have little knowledge of our Constitution and Bill of Rights, or what it means to live in a nation where all citizens are entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

They are convinced that all of the new “citizens” they bring in will be grateful to them for being given the gift of U.S. citizenship, and more easily manipulated than Americans like you and me.  These politicians are well aware that the American people are preparing to throw many of them out of office at the next election.  But rather than bend to the will of the American people, these arrogant Congressmen and Senators have decided to replace us with more pliable voters.

This month’s letter concerns statehood for Puerto Rico; what English First has been doing to stop it; and what you can do to help us ensure that the United States does not allow a Spanish-speaking island nation to become our 51st state.

Over the past few months, English First has fought fiercely in opposition to Puerto Rican statehood for some very important reasons.  First, and most important, Puerto Ricans do not want statehood.  They are quite happy living under the current status as a Commonwealth.  Nevertheless, every few years, the radical New Progressive Party that supports statehood, joins forces with the “progressives” in our Congress to force another vote to change Puerto Rico’s status.  Nobody wants what they are selling, but they won’t quit.  And this time, they actually rigged the vote so that it would exclude Commonwealth status as an option available to Puerto Rican voters, leaving them with only two choices – statehood or total independence.  Now the people of Puerto Rico aren’t stupid.  They know that total independence would mean instant poverty to this island nation.  So their only choice would have been to vote for statehood.

But as I said, English First is on the job.  Even though neither the Republicans nor the Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee would allow a single person to testify in opposition to statehood for Puerto Rico, we were the only group that managed to submit written testimony for the hearings.  Next, we worked with several strong Congressmen who were willing to stand and fight alongside us.  Representatives Paul Broun, Steve King, Jason Chaffetz and Gary Miller all offered or cosponsored amendments to derail the bill, such as an amendment to require Puerto Rico to adopt English as their official language before they could become a state.  As he introduced his amendment, Rep. Broun (R-GA) reminded his colleagues that “no state has ever been admitted to the union with a language other than English as its official language”.

Nevertheless, the mob running the Congress overpowered the Broun and King amendments, showing once again, their contempt for the desires of the American people to be reunited by our common language, English.  So the bill in Congress has no preconditions that would require Puerto Rico to adopt English as its official language, as was required by Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, and Oklahoma when they were admitted to the Union.  Despite these setbacks, we kept on fighting, hoping for a miracle … and then a miracle happened when Representative Virginia Foxx of North Carolina offered an amendment to put Commonwealth status back onto the ballot as a choice for the citizens of Puerto Rico… and it passed!

This amendment, hopefully, has put a dagger into the heart of their plan to force Puerto Ricans to choose statehood over full independence.  But is has to remain in place as the bill move to the U.S. Senate.  There was almost another miracle when a vote to recommit was offered and lost by only four votes.  A motion to recommit is, in plain English, a vote to send the bill back to Committee without voting on it.  It is, essentially, a motion to kill the entire bill.

The fact that such a motion came so close tells me support for statehood is soft and you and I can kill this bill if we work as hard as we can.

Here’s where we stand right now:

** A terribly flawed bill for statehood with no requirements that Puerto Ricans must speak English has passed the House and is currently being debated in the U.S. Senate.

** Statehood is part of a plan that, along with amnesty, will replace American voters with voters who will be more easily manipulated by powerful groups of elitist politicians who no longer consider themselves to be public servants.

** There are two more chances to kill this bill.  The first chance is by convincing the Senate to oppose it.  And the last chance to kill the bill is when the House and Senate will have to vote again after their separate versions of the statehood bill have been combined and reconciled.

What are our chances of stopping statehood – and saving our nation’s language, culture and unique American way of life?  Honestly, I think they are good, but only if you and I can keep the pressure on our own Congressmen and Senators to oppose it.

Yes, we can stop the drive for statehood.  But it all depends on you.  If you will Click here to send an email to your Senators in giving them the facts as to why statehood is the wrong idea at the worst possible time, many will reconsider their positions.  Also please take the time to Click here to send an email to your Representative urging them to vote against H.R. 2499

If you haven’t donated in a while, Click here to take this moment to renew your support for protecting our common language, English.  Statehood for Puerto Rico would automatically put in place a nation that has vowed never to accept English as its language.  It would be a calamity for America.  Thank you for your support for our work.

Sincerely,
Frank McGlynn
Executive Director
